Monthly Salary Of an IAS Officer

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the most prestigious careers in India. Every year more than a million people appear the UPSC Civil Service Examination with the dream to become an IAS officer. What is their main motive? Is it money or power or glamour? I must say if you are into money you can find better jobs in the private sector. IAS is more about serving the people and making a difference in their life.

Even though the salary of an IAS officer is not very attractive, it is not very bad too.

When we compare the facilities and social privileges of an IAS officer with his counterparts in the private sector, he enjoys good monetary benefits.

Let us check the monthly salary of an IAS officer based on the latest Pay Revision.

Calculate The Total Monthly Income Of an IAS Officer

To calculate the monthly income of an officer in Indian Administrative Service, use the formula below.

Total Income = Basic Pay + DA + HRA + TA

The total monthly salary of an IAS officer in India is the sum of his Basic pay, Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA).

According to the 7th Central Pay Commission, the Basic Pay of an entry-level IAS officer is 56100 Indian Rupees per month.

If the officer is not staying on the Government provided house, he can claim the House Rent Allowance (HRA).

However, most of the junior IAS officers will not receive HRA because of the Government provided stay.

Dearness Allowance (DA) of an IAS officer depends on the market inflation. So it is not a fixed amount.

Since the Dearness Allowance (DA) is variable, it changes two times a year.

The government of India changes the DA according to the inflation and the Pay Commission recommendation.

To read more about the DA of an IAS officer, I suggest you read the Cabinet press release on the same by visiting the link below.

The above press release states an increase of 2% in DA in addition to the existing rate of 7% of the Basic Pay to compensate for the current inflation effective from July 2018.

In most cases, a junior-level IAS officer cannot claim Travel Allowance (TA) because of the Government provided vehicle.

If an IAS officer wants to use the Government vehicle for his private use, he must pay an amount to Government. The government fixes that amount.

So the effective monthly earnings of a Juinor Level IAS officer is the sum of his Basic Pay and DA only.

Though he is not receiving HRA when comparing the high-quality housing with a cook, security staff and other facilities, he is enjoying a luxury beyond the actual HRA can provide.
