How to Join CBI as an Officer?

Two different agencies conduct examinations to fill vacancies in CBI. They are UPSC and SSC.

You can become a CBI officer either through UPSC or SSC.


To become a group A officer in CBI, you must choose the Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC and become an IPS officer. To join as Sub Inspector in CBI, you must clear the SSC CGL examination.

How to Apply For CBI Sub Inspector Post?


To become an Officer in CBI, you must pass the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL ) conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) every year.

SSC invites applications for the CGL examination every year, and you can apply on their official website.

It is a four-tier examination. The first two stages are online objective-type examinations.

The third stage is a descriptive type using pen and paper. The final step is document verification.


CBI Sub Inspector Exam Pattern


To become a Sub Inspector in the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI ), you must pass the SSC Combined Graduate Level Exam.

Let me explain the exam pattern. Four stages in the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL ) conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

You must pass all the exam stages to become a Sub Inspector in CBI.

Repeated Questions in CBI Objective Test


Tier 1 and Tier 2 exams in the CBI Sub Inspector test (SSC CGL) are objective types. You can expect questions from GK and Mental ability.

Age Limit
The age limit to apply for Sub Inspector in the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI ) is 20-30 years.

For the OBC category, the upper age limit to join CBI as Sub Inspector is 33, and 35 for SC/ST category.

To become a CBI Officer by passing the SSC CGL examination, you must have the following qualifications.

  1. Education Qualification



    1. Must have a Bachelor's Degree from a Recognized University.

      Candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation can also apply.

      However, they must possess Essential qualifications on or before 01-August of the year of notification.


  2. Age Limit



    1. 20-30 for General Category

    2. 20-33 years for OBC Category

    3. 20-35 for SC/ST category

CBI Officer Salary


The salary scale of a Sub Inspector in CBI is 9300 – 34800 Indian Rupees per month, and the CBI Inspector lies within the Grade Pay of 4200 Rupees.

The total in-hand salary per month is 44000 Indian Rupees.


CBI Officer Examination Syllabus


You must appear for the SSC CGL examination to join the Central Bureau of Investigation. You have to follow the latest syllabus announced by the SSC.


Physical standards for the Post of CBI Sub Inspector


You should have the following physical eligibility (minimum height and weight, chest expansion, and eyesight).

Women and tribal candidates have some relaxation on minimum physical requirements.

  • For women - 150 cm
  • Height relaxable for Hills-men and Tribal: 5 cm

When Will They Conduct the Next CBI Officer Recruitment Examination?


The SSC CGL exam fee for general category male candidates is 100 Indian Rupees, and there is no fee for females and SC/ST category.

SSC will notify the date of the examination in the exam calendar.

      To become a CBI Sub Inspector, you should appear for SSC CGL examination. You need a degree to appear for it.
