Becoming an officer in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a dream shared by many young aspirants in India.
Although this elite investigative agency enjoys widespread recognition, the selection process of a CBI officer remains unfamiliar to most people.
I discovered this during interviews with several students who approached GJR SSC Coaching Institute(GovernmentJobsRecruitment.in) seeking career guidance.
Motivated by their curiosity, I decided to write an article to guide similar aspirants across the country. This article outlines the key criteria, eligibility requirements, exam patterns, and steps involved in joining the CBI.
Let us begin by exploring the path to becoming a CBI officer after graduation.
How To Join CBI as an Officer?
Let me answer the first question asked by Ashish Kumar, a B.Com graduate from Noida. He asked, "Sir, my dream is to become a CBI officer. How do I join CBI as an officer?"
I will answer Ashish's question here.
Two different agencies (UPSC and SSC) fill Vacancies in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) through examinations conducted by them.
You can become a CBI officer through either of these routes, depending on the post you aim for:
To become a Group A officer in the CBI, you must qualify for the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and opt for the Indian Police Service (IPS).
To join as a Sub Inspector in the CBI, you need to clear the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
Name Of the Post | Recruitment Agency |
---|---|
Group A Officer | UPSC (Civil Service Examination) |
Sub Inspector | SSC CGL |
How To Apply For CBI Sub Inspector Post?
During an induction class at GJR SSC Coaching Institute(GovernmentJobsRecruitment.in) in Thiruvananthapuram, Melvin Thomas, a 4th year B.Tech student, asked me, "Sir, I wish to become a CBI Sub Inspector. However, I have no idea about where to apply for the job. Could you please share the application procedure?"
To become an officer (SI) in the Central Bureau of Investigation, you must clear the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination conducted annually by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
SSC releases the CGL examination notification every year, and interested candidates can apply through its official website:

Which Books Will Help You Pass the CBI Officer Recruitment Exam?
Ishwar Singh Sodha, an SSC aspirant from Mumbai, asked, "Hello sir, can you suggest a few books to prepare well for my next examination? I am looking for the best study material."
He aspired to become a CBI Sub Inspector by his next attempt. So, let me share some suggestions.
To be appointed as a CBI officer, you must clear all stages of the SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination. Each stage requires dedicated preparation and a clear understanding of the exam pattern.
To score high marks and succeed in each level, I recommend practicing with previous years’ question papers. Solving them helps you become familiar with the question format and improves your confidence.
Many reputed publishers offer rank files and guidebooks based on previous years’ questions, complete with detailed solutions. These resources are readily available in local bookstores or through online platforms.
